Clinically Validated Semen Analysis

Our semen analysis goes beyond standard parameters to deliver a comprehensive view of male reproductive health. We measure core metrics such as semen volume, sperm concentration, total motile sperm count, and progressive motility while also providing advanced insights into sperm morphology, velocity, functional sperm metrics, and DNA fragmentation, a key factor linked to successful conception and pregnancy outcomes.

Semen Volume
The total amount of semen produced in one ejaculation. Low volume can indicate blockages, infections, or prostate issues.
Sperm Concentration
Numbers of sperm per milliliter of semen. Low concentration (oligospermia) reduces the chances of sperm reaching the egg.
Sperm Mobility
The ability of sperm to move effectively. At least 42% should be motile. Low motility reduces fertilization chances.
Sperm Count
Number of sperm cells in the entire sample. Low sperm count decreases the likelihood of conception, especially with other issues.
Total Motile Sperm Count (TMSC)
The total number of motile sperm in the sample. Higher TMSC increases fertilization chances, while low TMSC suggest challenges.
Progressive Motility
The percentage of sperm that move actively and in a straight line or large circles, an essential factor for reaching and fertilizing the egg.
Functional Sperm
Sperm that move well, have a healthy shape and structure, and can fertilize an egg are key indicators of overall fertility potential.
Sperm Velocity
A measure of how fast sperm are swimming, which reflects their energy and efficiency in moving through the female reproductive tract toward the egg.
Sperm Morphology
The percentage of sperm with a normal shape. At least 4% should be normal. Abnormal shapes can hinder fertilization.
DNA Fragmentation
Measures the percentage of sperm with damaged DNA. High fragmentation levels are linked to fertility challenges and an increased risk of miscarriage.

WHO 6th Edition Guidelines

Mate Health adheres to the WHO 6th Edition (2021) guidelines for semen analysis, while many other vendors still rely on the WHO 5th Edition (2010). Your fertility deserves the most up-to-date science.

Confirming Effective Sterilization

A post-vasectomy analysis is the only reliable way to confirm the success of the procedure. It ensures no sperm are present in the semen, preventing unintended pregnancy and offering long-term peace of mind. If sperm are still detected, the test helps guide any necessary next steps with your doctor.

Here's What We Test for Post-Vasectomy

Motile Sperm (per mL)

Measures live, moving sperm in each milliliter of semen. AUA guidelines require this to be zero to confirm post-vasectomy sterility.

Immotile Sperm (per mL)

Non-moving sperm that cannot fertilize an egg. AUA allows clearance if fewer than 0.1 million/mL are present.

Total Sperm (per mL)

All sperm types (motile and immotile) per milliliter. Used for context, not for AUA clearance decisions.

Motile Sperm (per Ejaculate)

Total live sperm in the full sample. Zero motile sperm in the ejaculate confirms successful vasectomy per AUA guidelines.

Immotile Sperm (per Ejaculate)

Non-motile sperm in the full sample. Permitted under AUA guidelines if motile sperm are absent.

Total Sperm (per Ejaculate)

Combined sperm count across the sample. Reported for reference, but motility determines clearance.

Why Motility Matters After a Vasectomy

Following a vasectomy, it's common to see residual sperm in the ejaculate as the reproductive tract clears. However, the presence of motile (moving) sperm is clinically significant. Differentiating motile from non-motile sperm helps clinicians determine whether follow-up or further intervention is needed to confirm sterility.

Comparison of features between Mate Health and competing platforms in post-vasectomy sperm motility testing
Feature Mate Health
(Active Cooling + Semen Preservative)
Competition
(Ambient Temp + Buffer + Algorithm)
Motility Detection Direct biological measurement of motile and immotile sperm per mL and per ejaculate. Active cooling preserves sample viability, ensuring accurate confirmation of residual fertility in accordance with AUA post-vasectomy guidelines. Many platforms do not directly measure motility. Instead, software modeling estimates sperm presence after temperature degradation. These do not meet AUA guidelines requiring motile sperm confirmation.
Reporting Depth Complete, quantified reporting of motile, immotile, and total sperm per mL and per ejaculate enabling clinical decisions and compliance documentation. Reports only concentration or presence/absence of sperm. Lack of motility differentiation reduces clinical utility and complicates clearance assessment.
Sample Integrity Maintains biological integrity via 2-15°C active cooling and proprietary preservative preventing degradation and preserving motility. Passive ambient gel packs don't prevent temperature degradation, compromising motility preservation and accuracy.
Cost and Ease of Use Premium: Priority overnight shipping, active cooling, and medically aligned logistics ensure fast turnaround and diagnostic-grade integrity. Lower: Simplified logistics without temperature reduction may reduce integrity. Algorithmic corrections reduce clinical reliability.

Following AUA Guidelines

AUA Guidelines Logo

Mate Health adheres to the American Urological Association (AUA) guidelines for post-vasectomy semen analysis to ensure accurate and reliable results. Proper timing and interpretation of semen analysis are crucial in confirming the success of the vasectomy and determining when contraception is no longer needed.
